Island Life
We live on a barrier island directly South of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Our portal to another world lies at the East end of our neighborhood with a simple, yet beautiful dune crossover. On an average day, we’ll come here three times on our daily beach walks, or to just hang out with our neighbors and friends. We have an an abundance of beach life to admire. Between the birds, tortoise, dolphins, and fish, we never experience a boring moment and every morning walk is unique.
To the West of us is the Banana River, on which we kayak and sail. With islands to explore and manatees to watch, the river not only is a natural bounty, but a great natural boundary. On the other side of the river is Merritt Island which lies between the Banana and Indian Rivers. Across the Indian River lies the mainland - about 8 miles away from Cape Canaveral. In the old days, it took a ferry all day to ply these waters. Today, bridges expedite the commute. To our North, a couple blocks away, is Port Canaveral, which marks the top of our island. To the South, the barrier island stretches 30 miles to the Sebastian Inlet. In our area, two causeways connect us to Merritt Island.

Of course, FoleyIsland is a state of mind. We’ve dropped anchor off of many islands. Key West, Long Key, Tangier, Cumberland and countless others. Don grew up on an island and certainly has an affinity to them, and that has carried over to the rest of the family. So it’s natural our website be named FoleyIsland. But here’s our real-world island, at least the top of it. The cool thing about island life is that you can hop on your bike and ride down to the local grocery and get all you need. The bank is closer and the post-office closer still. You can hit an ACE hardware, a couple good pizza spots and a deli without putting a key in the ignition.
